I sought treatment for Gastroparesis, which is a stomach condition that causes your stomach muscles to be paralyzed. This condition causes excessive bloating, pain, and limits the types of food that can be eaten. I had seen 5 different doctors, and took 7 different medications for this condition over the course of 4 years, none of which worked. The doctors told me that there was nothing else to try and that I might have this condition and these symptoms for the rest of my life. I had heard people talk about acupuncture but never really knew what it was or thought it could actually help, but at that point in my life I was willing to try anything.
I had my first appointment on June 23, 2004 and ever since that day my stomach has been great. I have not had the symptoms that I had for those 4 years since I began my acupuncture treatment. I have been able to eat whatever I want and not had any pain or had to worry about how it would affect my health. I know that this sounds crazy but it really is true.
Most people are afraid of trying acupuncture because of the thought of needles being used. Honestly, the “needles” used should have another name because they are nothing like the needles used to draw blood. They DO NOT hurt! I actually look forward to my acupuncture treatment because I get to lie down and relax for 30-40 minutes.
As for Ocean Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine as a business they are MAGNIFICENT and I mean that with all my heart. Once I started going to acupuncture and saw immediate results my father began going and then my mother went as well. My father has had the same success with acupuncture treatment that I have. Unfortunately, my mother passed away, but with that John and Kim went above and beyond their job description for my family and I. They are all wonderful people and will do whatever they can to help you physically and mentally. My life has changed because of them!

When I first learned that Ocean Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine had come to Manahawkin, I was quite excited. I had known some people who had benefited from this type of treatment and was curious enough to make an appointment for myself. Other than some occasional shoulder pain and seasonal allergies, I felt pretty well, and was mostly looking for preventative treatment.

During my first visit, Kim spent quite a bit of time with me, discussing my medical history, my self care, my work, and my emotional health. I immediately liked that she was working with me, the whole person, and looking at symptoms and patterns, clarifying the information I gave her. Kim was genuinely interested in me, and we identified some of the menopausal symptoms that were most distressing to me. By the time she began the actual acupuncture treatment, I was relatively relaxed, even though needles were not my favorite things.

My sex drive has increased, as has my overall energy level (needless to say, this has had a great effect on my marital relationship!). This has come without me making any changes in the way I live, other than treatment with Kim. When I first came to Ocean Acupuncture I was disabled as a result of thoracic surgery performed on me at age 54. In order to remove a tumor, surgeons had to sever two major spinal nerves. Consequently, I lost all feeling on the right side of my back and mid torso while also experiencing constant neurological pain. After a year in traditional pain management at the University of Pennsylvania and several months of physical therapy, I made minimal progress and was advised by physicians that nothing else could be done. I was released from care using three prescription medications, one of which I was told might be required indefinitely. I mentioned to both of my treating physician and physical therapist that I was considering trying acupuncture and they both encouraged me to do so.

It was at that point I turned to you and your associates at Ocean Acupuncture. I made noticeable progress shortly after treatments were begun and improved dramatically over the course of acupuncture and herbal therapy. I am a sixty-eight year old male and am experiencing my second successful treatment series under the hands of a person trained in the age old practice of acupuncture.

My first was fifteen years ago when I was referred to the services of an acupuncturist who treated me for smoking. Being an exceptionally heavy smoker (3 packs per day) I was not interested in quitting, but my employer insisted I go for this treatment. I relented and went for the treatment knowing it would fail. The long and the short of it was I quit with a minimum of treatments. I would call this a very successful experience.

My second and current treatment began fifteen months ago. My daughter, a social worker, was seeking pain management treatment for a person addicted to pain medication. She called, from the yellow pages, OCEAN ACUPUNCTURE, and spoke with John Manzella in regard to this situation. In doing so, not only was my pain management discussed, but weight control management as well.

She passed this information on to me. In addition, I have psoriatic arthritis and am unable to take normal medication for the condition because of severe congestive heart failure. Based on her discussion and the recommendation of my rheumatologist, I contacted OCEAN ACUPUNCTURE, and made an appointment for evaluation.

John sat with my wife and I for about one hour and explained the whole procedure. He further explained the theory behind acupuncture. I considered and accepted the program he outlined. Now, eighteen months later I have considerably less arthritis back pain and have lost more than forty pounds. Hi, my name is Doug, and I am a 53 year old male who has been suffering from lower back pain for longer than I can remember. As the years went by the pain began to become more intense and last longer. I finally had enough and decided to do something about it.

At the men’s health night at Southern Ocean County Hospital, I met Kim at the acupuncture table.  I explained my problem and she explained all the different treatments and procedures. I had a little knowledge of acupuncture and the more Kim explained things the more I liked what I was hearing. I have been receiving treatments for over two months now and without a doubt, it was the best decision I ever made. I broke my wrist in 1996 and after I was out of the cast it seemed to be fine, until about 2001. Then I developed osteoarthritis and suffered great pain in my right wrist. I went to two doctors who both suggested shots of cortisone or surgery. Both were unacceptable to me.

When I received the first treatment the pain and swelling were very bad, but I noticed an improvement after my second treatment and then steady improvement from then on.

The swelling in my hand is down considerably, and the pain is almost gone. It used to last for hours and I would have to apply either heat or cold to relieve the pain, followed by three Advil ts.

My golf game is now terrific and I feel very happy and energetic. I have more staying power and have even played 18 holes of golf and resumed my daily activities of walking 3-4 miles, 3-4 times a week.

My Angels…For ten years I have been seeing doctors for serious back pain. In the spring of 1997 I had my first sciatic attack. My doctor, at the time, sent me for all of the usual tests, etc. and the conclusion diagnosis was “spinal stenosis.” I was sent to physical therapy, prescribed aleve and advil, and even had a few cortisone injections which brought some temporary relief.
We moved to ocean county in 2003 and I continued to do exercises and use aleve when the pain was severe.
In the spring of 2005, Kimberly Manzella came to our clubhouse and gave a most enlightening seminar on the uses of acupuncture. Her information along with other material I had on the subject convinced me to give acupuncture a try. I figured if this worked, I would give up shots and medications that were affecting me undesirably.
My treatment began in June 2005 and now April 2006 I was down from three treatments per week to one per month. Patience and perseverance paid off for me. The severe pain was gone. I get a few twinges after strenuous exercise but the pain no longer persists as before. The fact that I can pursue a regular exercise program now is an accomplishment. I also have much more energy and feel that my overall health is much improved.

Pains and needles…I took advantage of a community outreach offer for a complimentary eastern/western examination and evaluation…Up to that point, I never even imagined that acupuncture and herbal medicine would produce such a wonderful and dramatic improvement of my hip problem, along with a general aura of wellness. I was diagnosed three years ago with degenerative arthritis of my right hip. I had already suffered with it for some years prior to diagnosis…Trying a more conservative approach, I was place on a program of physical therapy and an anti-inflammatory medication… This produced some short-term relief, but the anti-inflammatory medication adversely affected my peripheral vision and I felt I was going nowhere fast.

The pain, while not particularly excruciating, was pervasive. There was no relief, no matter what I did…My hip joint could not properly articulate, my stride became a hobble. I would favor the afflicted area to the point where my body was beginning to contort and still the pain never left me…Walking a short distance became a chore that I sat around and gained weight…I short, my life became much less than pleasant.

When I began the program of acupuncture in conjunction with the Chinese herbal medicine, I never expected that this would be such a positive experience for me. The results far exceeded my expectations…I feel better and can do more now than I could do for years. Instead of sitting around and gaining weight, I am eating a more nutritional diet and have lost considerable poundage. My activity rate has soared and I pursue all of the things that I enjoy. A traditional for of medical art and science that has endured for more than 4,000 years cannot be ignored. I only wish that I had known and used acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine sooner.

I was experiencing severe lower back pain radiating down my left leg. At the time I was being treated by a chiropractor with no results. My husband had experienced excellent results with acupuncture, so I decided to try it. It took a few weeks to really start feeling better, but treatment three times a week helped almost immediately. I was soon able to move both legs without pain. I was able to travel by car and by airplane with little discomfort. I love going to Acupuncture. I started at OAHM over one year ago. I was having problems with my shoulder and did not want to continue the cortisone shots the Orthopedic doctor had given me. Despite the shots I was still in agreat deal of pain which kept me up at night and interfered in my active lifestyle. A friend suggested trying Acupuncture and my shoulder has become as good as new.

I remember one time I came in and I had a cold that had been bothering me all day.  I received a treatment to address the cold and I couldn’t believe it but I began breathing with less congestion about ½ an hour later. I suffered for about 18 years with morning headaches that were a constant source of pain, and interrupted the enjoyment of my daily activities. When I started receiving treatment I had slight relief at first, but as treatment continued I felt relief for longer periods of time.

The time between headaches continued to get longer and longer. I now have a very low grade headache about ever 2 to 3 weeks. It is such a joy to wake up without a headache every day. Its adds so much to my enjoyment of each new day.

In 2003 , at 32, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. We all learn from mistakes!

Starting smoking was a bad decision I made in my early 20’s. Now a women in my early 50’s I made a good decision for myself. To stop!! The one thing most important is that you really want to stop.

In three weeks I have not had one cigarette.

I was very confident that acupuncture would work. In my first visit it was told to me that it would take 3 weeks for my body to fully de-tox from all years of smoking.

After my first visit and 18 needles and 25 minutes of relaxation, I threw my cigarettes in the garbage and decided I will not start ever again.

Yes, in the first week, after dinner, with my morning coffee, walking the dog, and after sex, I may have really wanted a cigarette, but guess what – I haven’t had one. I did not keep any in the house and reminded myself that they were too expensive anyway.

After the second week, things I could smell and taste things better again. My car smelled so bad to me that I almost got sick. My coat and my clothes had to be washed. The smell of smoking had become very offensive to me.

Trying other methods didn’t work for me. The patch, the gum, cold turkey, none of it worked, acupuncture made the difference. I am much happier and healthier thank you. Thank you John Manzella.

My name is Victoria. I am a sixty year old female. At the age of fifty, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. My surgeon performed a masectomy, and my oncologist recommended six months of chemotherapy. Both procedures left me weak and tired, but gratefully I was pronounced cancer free. Since I am an optimist, I quickly resumed my daily activities of wife, mother, and teacher.
Ten years later, I am still by the grace of God and medical supervision cancer free. However, I am trying to cope with migraine headaches that have become more severe and frequent with each passing year. I sought advice from numerous doctors and finally a neurologist specializing in migraines at the university of Pennsylvania Hospital where my daughter is a clinical nurse specialist on the oncology floor. After almost two years of treatment, the best he could offer was a migraine pain killing drug called Immetrix and an anti-depressant called nortriptyline. Both have side effects and neither prevents migraines. I was still having approximately five headaches a week and developed a ringing and pulsing in my ears. At my last visit, he told me he was pleased with my progress and to come back in one year.
My daughter had just finished a pain management paper for her master’s degree. For research, she observed an acupuncturist and was so impressed with the results of the study that she urged me to see a licensed acupuncturist.
I began treatment in January of 2007. I was depressed, tired, and anxious about everything. I had trouble falling asleep at night, which was aggravated by frequent indigestion. My skin was breaking out with rosacea and adult acne. I couldn’t concentrate and simple tasks were overwhelming. I also had gained unwanted weight due to the medication I was taking.
At the first visit, John compiled a thorough medical history. He actually made eye contact with me and seemed concerned about my problems. Since I had these headaches for a long time he offered no immediate cures but felt that acupuncture and herbal medicine and certain diet and lifestyle changes could improve my migraines and the quality of my life. I remember walking out of the office feeling hopeful for the first time in many years.
Five months later I no longer have trouble sleeping. I can’t remember when I took medication for indigestion. I am down to approximately six headaches a month. Remember, I was getting that number of headaches a week. The relief from the intense pain of the migraines is remarkable. The throbbing and ringing in my ears has reduced considerably. I can actually carry on with daily tasks without retreating into a darkened room.

I first became involved with Ocean Acupuncture three years ago.  I had no energy and was suffering from not only "hot flashes" but the other associated side effects of menopause.  With all the negative press about hormone replacement therapy, I decided to try a natural method.  I had read about acupuncture and was curious about how this therapy could help me.

When I first walked into the offices of Ocean Acupuncture, I was keenly aware of the feeling of calmness that immediately enveloped me.  I had an evaluation that listed all my problems, my history and what I was looking to accomplish from these treatments.  John explained everything in detail as to what to expect and between acupuncture treatment and herbs, I started to get my energy back.  In a matter of a few weeks the hot flashes were less frequent and in a few months stopped completely.  John and Kim also taught me proper nutrition and how to eat these nutritious foods properly (eg. food combining).  Their whole approach to healing the body has such a calming effect not only to the body but to the spirit as well.

To keep my Qi flowing, I would continue with monthly acupuncture treatments.  However, a few years ago, my husband became ill and I became his caregiver.  I still went for monthly acupuncture treatments but my exercise routine and nutrition intake suffered.  When my husband passed and I was finally able to take care of myself medically, I found out I had high cholesterol.  Of course, the doctors wanted to put me on Lipitor which I flat out refused.  I spoke with John and started taking an herbal formula called cholisma.  Between getting back to good nutrition, acupuncture treatments and taking the herbs, my cholesterol came down 40 points in 5 months.  Again, acupuncture also helped to calm the stress that I was going through after my husband's death.

Just recently I suffered from abdominal pain.  The doctors were not sure if it was colon or gallbladder problems.  The pain was very intense.  I went for acupuncture treatments twice weekly and started an herb tea.  The pain subsided and I started to feel like myself again.  I had a colonoscopy and there was nothing there that would have caused the pain.  My gallbladder is fine as well.  I have come to find that I have a tendency that when I get upset I hold my feelings in..blocking my emotions.  This is what was most likely causing the blockage of the flow of Qi through my digestive system causing the pain.  it has been over a month now and I am pain free.

I have been in the medical profession for almost thirty years.  Western medicine has been my livelihood and my lifestyle.

After several neck injuries over my lifetime with increasing shoulder pain, I was diagnosed with herniated cervical discs.  The plan of action would be pain management.   I took anti-inflammatory medication for several yers, with the need for increasing strengths as time went on.  The medicine I was taking was removed from the market due to serious side effects in some patients.  I tried numerous other drugs, and none of them worked.  The pain became so intense I was unable to use my right arm or hand, and was unable to work.

I thought I had exhausted all avenues.  I was only 47, too young to be doomed to a life of pain and inactivity.  I was skeptical when my physician suggested acupuncture, but I had run out of options.  I was willing to try anything.

I was diagnosed with scleroderma 3 years ago.  I was excited to experience something new that I knew would benefit my health.  I could feel a new sensation throughout my whole body during my first treatment.  My joint pain has since seemed to lessen and it feels more like a stiffness instead of a pain.  I am moving better, I am a little more flexible, and I feel confident that my journey to wellness is going in the right direction.  I haven't cried from pain or frustration in quite a while.  I can get up from a sitting position easier and am able to sleep on my sides again.  I am back walking again and have even gone for a bike ride!  I am very happy with this facility.  It offers over and above what it needs to and the people are very professional.

I injured my back and hip five months ago prior to seeking acupuncture treatments.  I had existing fibromyalgia.  I had problems standing, walking and completing everyday chores.  Doctors recommended surgery or steroid shots in my spine to relive the constant pain.

I felt a decrease in pain and started to feel better after the first couple of treatments.  pain decreased (on a scale of one to ten - ten being the worst) from a ten to an eight.  My condition improved weekly, sometimes two steps foward and one step back, but always an improvement from the constant pain.

I am able to walk and do more than before I started my treatments.  I have some pain but I must adjust my normal routine and slow down, rest and relax more.
